Industrialization and Art

Industrialization has been part of why society is this convenient and developed since humans starting integrating science and scientific method of thinking into our lives. From the ancient invention of printing press to more recent developments on Artificial intelligence and robots, humans have never stopped in seeking industrialization. With the integration of AI in our daily lives and work environment, the trend these two years seen in Investment Banking and Consulting especially has been more layoffs and more people finding it challenging to find jobs. AI has slowly replaced jobs with higher efficiency and lower cost. I think society has always been welcoming towards industrialization and praised the development of science but these few years there has been more focus on whether or not we need industrialization at such a high speed and if robots would replace the human warmth and emotions that relationships stem on.

Referencing words by Walter Benjamin, he believes “ perfect reproduction of a work of art is lacking in one element: its presence in time and space, its unique existence at the place where it happens to be. ” He later on gives multiple examples comparing public reaction to movies vs. Picasso paintings etc. I believe with industrialization society has been more accepting to different forms of art, the progressiveness of art and the combination of science with art. Society has become more welcoming to new art demonstrations as they have been to new inventions, which also has brought out the perspective on how art is not opposite of science or industrialization but in a sense the artworks of each time period can be seen as a bookmark of the progression of society in that period.

Dune 2 Movie

A literature and movie example would be from the popular Dune movie series which were adapted from a novel written in 1970s. The world described is in the future where different social groups have to fight over natural resources depleted but also industrialization has allowed each group to invent specific items that allow them to better conserve these resources. I read both the book and watched the movie and I would assume that the author’s vision of what the characters looked in his imagination would be different from what the movie version looks like. This is because industrialization and the progress of science has influenced societies view on art, on beauty and even on the demonstration of art.

  1. Hi Sherry!

I really liked that you referenced Dune as it was written in the 1970s but still has cultural influence with the revival in recent years because of the film remakes. I agree that the series show a response to industrialization and its influence on art. I also agree that there needs to be a discussion of the speed of industrialization while praising the advancements in technology. It is clear that industrialization has benefited society in many ways, but society should still be weary.
