Two cultures

As a double major student I walk from north to south campus almost on a daily basis for classes all the way at Anderson to Psychology or coding classes at Boelter Hall. Not only do the buildings remind me of this divide between humanities and science focused subjects, but also the students', their facial expressions and even clothing details. North campus classes and students focus on collaboration, creativity and tend to dress in more vibrant colors and patterns. South campus classes tend to emphasis on mastery of skill and practice and students dress also in solid darker color schemes.

UCLA's North V. South Campus: The Debate Debunked

After reading and watching over the lectures, I gained a refreshed perspective on this topic of “two cultures” or the divide between arts and sciences. As mentioned by C.P Snow, the author believes that the lack of understanding and communication between people in these two fields stem from the the lack of appreciation. Adding on to this point, Vesna mentions the a potential solution to the division between two cultures which is to integrate and establish a third culture - or a middle point of a combination of both sides.

This emergence of a third culture, a combination of both creativity and innovation from both sides can be seen in a lot of new inventions including AI. Rather than focusing purely on machines innovation, we are also innovating machines for art purposes, including the usage of it in artworks for instance live lighting shows. In the future, this gap between art and science will slowly grow smaller and smaller and we acknowledge both fields and their importance to society.

  1. Hello Sherry!

It must have been very interesting noticing this divide when you first traversed the campus for your double major. Since I'm an art history major/film minor, I rarely walk down to south campus. Most of my "experiences" with south campus was when I was on the BruinBus and decided to look out the windows. I found it fascinating when you mentioned how you also notice the divide with students' facial expressions and clothing. In a way, the clothing styles prominent between north and south campus help to perpetrate the stereotypes that exist for the disciplines. Art/humanities students wear bright colors while science/technology students wear dark colors. I also agree that a third culture is emerging where the arts and sciences are becoming more intertwined like with the new inventions that mix the two, it's rather quite exciting! Thank you for your insightful post, Sherry!
